Product Description

1796 British Light Cavalry Saber - Economy

Early in the French Revolutionary War, a British cavalry officer named Le Marchant commissioned the construction of a new saber. His design drew inspiration from the short but rugged blades designed for hacking that were favored by the Turks and Hungarians.

Produced in Birmingham by Henry Osborn, Le Marchant’s new saber was eventually adopted as the Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Saber and saw widespread use not only with British forces but also with troopers from Prussia, Spain, Portugal, and others. Known as the “Blucher Sabre” by the Prussians, it was officially adopted by that country in 1811.
