1796 British Light Infantry Officers Sword
In 1786, the British Army adopted an official pattern for infantry officerís swords. The piece selected had a fixed double shell guard. It quickly became apparent that the design had one major flaw - the fixed shell guard rubbed the officerís uniform and caused excessive wear.
To remedy the problem, in 1796, a modified design was adopted which had a hinged guard that folded flat thus eliminating the problem.
The piece saw extensive use with British forces and was widely copied by other nations. The sword was noted as not particularly well suited as a weapon, but nevertheless remained in service until the adoption of its replacement around 1822.
