Product Description

1853 British Cavalry Sword

1853 saw the adoption by Britain of a new system of supply in which swords were supplied by the Board of Ordnance. The new cavalry weapon supplied - the 1853 British Cavalry Sword - was designed to meet the needs of both heavy and light cavalry. The blade was designed for the dual purpose of both thrusting and cutting, although critics claimed that it did neither particularly well.

Better received improvements included a pierced sheet guard which was found to be more robust and less prone to breakage than the older wrought guards, and it was the first British cavalry sword to incorporate the tang into the grip, a feature that added much in the way of strength. The sword featured either a round leather or hard rubber grip held in place by rivets.

This sword was sold in large quantities to both the United States and Confederacy during the Civil War and saw use on both sides.
