1803 British Infantry Officers Sword
1803 Infantry Officers Sword
By the early 1800s, short sabers had began to be used by officers in flank companies (grenadiers and light infantry companies) within line regiments. These units either spearheaded assaults or acted as skirmishers, activities that made a long sword an incumbrance to movement.
In official recognition of what had already become practice, the army approved the adoption of the 1803 Infantry Officers Sword, sometimes called the 1803 Flank Officers Sword, for officers of light companies and grenadiers, as well as officers of light infantry and rifle regiments. The weapons themselves came in a wide variety of styles with variations in blade curve, guard shape, and decoration. They remained in service until finally replaced around 1822.
