1839 British Tower Musket
The P1839 Tower Muskets were the first British percussion muskets. They were very similar to the 3rd Model Brown Bess (flintlock) except that the lock was percussion. They were smoothbore and .75 caliber.
The majority of the P1839s imported during the Civil War were utilized by Confederate troops. Although the US gov't purchased about 3,000 pieces during the rush for arms at the war's onset, the Confederates purchased the many thousands.
Confederate purchasing agent Caleb Huse purchased 21,400 pieces. Isaac, Campbell & Co purchased at least 10,000 more and possibly as many as 22,000 in total.
Ammunition for the P1839s (as well as the P1842s) was produced in numerous places including at Selma, AL.
